Murex

$55.00

Inspired by the twisting, sculptured shape of the protective shells found on some predatory sea snails, Rafael Araujo’s Murex brings together striking color and an intricate geometric framework. Created as part of the artist's Calculations series, an ongoing examination of the complexity of life, Murex is a fascinating glimpse at Araujo's unique view of the natural world.

One might think these illustrations are born from a CPU, but in fact they are drafted entirely by hand in a sublime mix of mathematical perfection and artistic execution. Murex was originally created as a pen and ink drawing on canvas with acrylic paint, and is available here exclusively as a premium archival print.

About the Artist

Born in Venezuela in 1957, artist Rafael Araujo is a lifelong resident of Caracas. He originally studied music, a passion that lead him to composing and eventually to a fascination with architecture where he perfected his draftsmanship. Araujo is greatly influenced by three-dimensional renderings found in renaissance perspective drawing as well as the works of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. Though he openly deflects the title of "artist," his dozens of exhibitions in galleries across Venezuela (and soon the United States) over the last 30 years suggest the contrary.
