Launched in 2010, Colossal is one of the highest trafficked art and culture websites in the world reaching 1-2 million readers each month. Our online gift shop, opened in 2013, ships thousands of orders annually to customers around the globe. We specialize in unique design objects, art prints, toys, and other fun and unusual gadgets connecting to our goal of carrying exceptionally fun things for creative people. The Colossal Shop is primarily an online venture with editorial offices, warehouse, and fulfillment split in a fun office space in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.

The Position

This is a part-time, hourly position coordinating the Colossal Shop’s entire e-commerce operation including procurement, sales and marketing, fulfillment, and customer service. The work requires an extreme attention to detail, a people-first mentality, and the ability to juggle multiple projects across several disciplines in a relaxed and creative environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

— Oversee the daily end-to-end operations of The Colossal Shop

— Field customer service requests via email in an exceedingly helpful and timely manner

— Efficiently pack and ship orders, process returns, troubleshoot shipping issues, and order packing supplies

— Conceptualize and create weekly marketing newsletters and create content for social media accounts

— Initiate and maintain positive working relationships with 50+ product vendors from around the world

— Order new products and reorder existing items to maintain consistent inventory and a balanced budget

— Shelving new inventory & conducting monthly inventory audits

—  Suggest store improvements to increase efficiency and sales

— Use analytics and reporting tools to track and improve the success of specific products, sales goals, and marketing campaign


— Experience in creating marketing content: copywriting, curating ecommerce newsletters, and social media

— Experience in some or all of the following platforms or competitors: Shopify, Mailchimp, HelpScout (customer service), ShipStation, Wordpress

— Extremely self-motivated, organized, and disciplined with a strong willingness to learn

— Exceptional time management skills. Ability to work independently for long periods

— Strong problem-solving capabilities and a service-oriented, people-first approach to vendor management and customer relations

— A strong eye and interest in design, color, and layout

— Interest in the arts, e-commerce / marketing, or design

— Ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic, creative environment

— Physical dimensions of the position: this job involves lifting boxes of inventory (under 30 lbs), pulling products from inventory shelves, assembling cardboard shipping boxes, and moving mail bags of packed orders approximately 20 feet into the mail lobby


Helpful Skills + Interests

— Comfort in photographing products in our studio and the ability to color correct & crop images in Photoshop

— Ability to make simple banner ads or other special web graphics

— Interest or experience in curating retail product offerings

— Basic familiarity with HTML and CSS

Hours & Location

This is a part-time hourly position in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood for 25 hours / week with potential for more hours during the holiday season (mid-October through December). Preferred schedule is for 4-5 hours a day every day, including morning hours. Some flexibility based on the selected candidate’s availability. Position to start as soon as possible.
